Qualitative Research

Quantitative research is not too difficult to find when searching the online databases. On the other hand, it can be a little more challenging to find qualitative research when you are searching.  To help with with finding qualitative research articles, the suggestions below may be helpful.

Tip #1 Qualitative Research Filter (PsycINFO)

When using PsycINFO use a "qualitative research filter" as you enter your search terms in preparation to run your search. You find the filter when you scroll down to the bottom of the advanced search page in the "Methodology" section.

Tip #2 Include Specific Qualitative Terms in Your Search

Sample terms:

qualitative

action research
cluster sample
content analysis
discourse analysis
ethnography
ethnonursing
field study
focus group
grounded theory
hermeneutic
heuristic
interview
life experiences
narrative
observational method
phenomenological
semiotics

Tip #3 Avoid Quantitative Search Terms

It is easy to use quantitative search terms unintentionally, so try to avoid terms such as:

cohort study
comparative study
controlled trial
co-relational
data
longitudinal study
measurement
meta-analysis
numerical
population study
relationship
reliability
statistics
systematic review
validity
