Codes: Federal

Typically, laws that have been passed are then incorporated into legal codes.  A code is basically a system of laws arranged by topic or legal subject area and a code is used as the legal authority or as the law of the land.  Codes are normally updated as new public laws are passed or amended or repealed.

Federal

United States Code.  A new edition is normally published every six years with supplements serving as updates in between.  The first United States Code was published in 1926 and, starting in 1934, has appeared every six years since then.  State governments have their own codes and the publication of new editions varies greatly from one state to another although all provide supplements to serve as updates in between new editions of the code.
