FAQs

Unless noted otherwise, page numbers refer to the 6th edition of the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association

1. Where can I see an example? Examples for most types of citations appear on pages 198-215. Remember that the journal title and the volume are italized but the issue and page numbers are not.

2. Do I have to include a Doi? Yes, if one is available, more information is on page 191. The doi is often displayed on the first page of an article but can appear at the top or the bottom, usually within a shortened citation. If no doi appears on the article, check CrossRef, http://www.crossref.org/guestquery/.

3. What if I can't find a Doi? If you have throughly examined the article itself and checked CrossRef and are still unable to find a doi, you use the URL of the home page of the journal in which the article appears. (example on page 199). Note this is not the url of the pdf itself or the database in which you found the article, it is the home page of the journal. You will probably have to Google the journal name in order to find the home page.

4. How do I cite a website? This question is addressed on APA Style (http://www.apastyle.org/). Click on Websites (on the left under Quick Answers-Reference). In general, website citations use this format:

Author, A. (date). Title of document. Retrieved from http://xxxxxxxxx

If there is no author listed, the Title of the document appears first, then the date.

Example for the website of the American Heart Association:

American Heart Association (2013). Retrieved from http://www.heart.org/HEARTORG/.

For in text citations, use a shortened form of the title. Titles which are italicized in the reference list are italicized in text, titles which are not italicized in the reference list are placed in quotation marks.

Example of in text citation of the American Heart Association website:

("American Heart", 2013)
