Virology: Getting started

Overview

This guide is intended to help you with the scientific paper and annotated bibliography portions of your Virology Project.  You need to find 3 review papers and 2 research articles for your annotated bibliography.

Writing the Lay Summary

Medline Plus is a quality go-to source for consumer health information and is maintained by the National Library of Medicine / National Institute of Health.  Check out some of the entries for examples of appropriate content and writing style for a lay summary.

PubMed

PubMed is the best database for the BIOL 5230 virus assignment.

PubMed is a database maintained by the National Library of Medicine and the National Institue of Health.  It contains more than 24 million scientific and biomedical citations from 1950 - present.  The NLM has put together several short videos and handouts on how best to search PubMed and includes an extensive help section.

Getting started in PubMed

To develop a search for articles, you'll want to combine the particular virus you're studying + the aspect you want to learn more about.  For example, I might try the following search:

SARS/severe acute respiratory syndrome AND virus replication

Here are a few other words you might combine with the virus you selected:

  • chemistry
  • classification
  • genetics
  • growth & development
  • pathogenicity
  • viral structures
  • virus replication
