VPN: Home

Links and tips

VPN allows you to work from home as if you were on campus.

What is VPN?

Short for Virtual Private Network, VPN software makes it appear that you are on-campus, even if you are using an off-campus computer or AU Wireless. This is useful for resources that are limited to only on-campus use. It is also convenient for resources that require off-campus authentication, such as online journals and databases.

Download VPN software

Cisco VPN software is available only to Auburn University faculty, students, and staff.

An Auburn University User ID and OIT password are required to download and use the Cisco VPN software. If you are faculty, staff, or student, and do not have an Auburn University User-ID, contact the Technology Hotline at 844-4944. If you have forgotten your password, you will need to visit the OIT Help Desk.

    1. Log in to www.auburn.edu/myaccount with your Auburn User ID and password.
    2. Click on the link "Request VPN Access".
    3. Answer the questions they ask to verify your bona fides.
    4. Log off.
    5. Log in to AU Install with your Auburn User ID and password
    6. Scroll down until you come to Cisco AnyConnect VPN Client.
    7. Download and install the Windows or Macintosh version of Cisco AnyConnect VPN client onto your computer. You may need to login to MyAccount before downloading the software.
    8. Look for the installation and configuration instructions. The "Tutorials & Troubleshooting" link can help get you started.
    9. You are now ready to establish a VPN connection.

Using VPN from off-campus or via AU Wireless

  1. Go to the Start Menu.
  2. Choose Programs, then Cisco System VPN Client, then VPN Dialer.
  3. Choose Connect from Off Campus and login with your AU User name and password. If you are using AU Wireless, then choose "AU Wireless" instead.
  4. You should now be connected the AU network and able to on-campus only resources. There should be a VPN connection icon in the right corner of the screen.
  5. If you wish to use an Internet browser, open a new Internet browser window, or refresh any that you already have open.
  6. To end the VPN session, right-click on VPN icon.
