What is the Serial Set?

The United States Congressional Serial Set consists of Congressional publications along with a variety of other documents. Annual reports from government agencies, accounts of explorations (Lewis and Clark), beautiful maps and pictures, statistics, and an incredible mix of other publications all make an appearance in the Serial Set. A good rule of thumb is that when you have exhausted all other resources, check the Serial Set!

The Serial Set began in 1817 and is made up primarily of the following types of documents:

  • Senate and House Documents
  • Senate and House Reports
  • Senate and House Journals
  • Senate Executive Reports
  • Senate Treaty Documents

The predecessor to the Serial Set is the American State Papers (1789-1838) which is divided into the following topics:

  • Foreign Relations
  • Indian Affairs
  • Finance
  • Commerce and Navigation
  • Military Affairs
  • Naval Affairs
  • Post-office Department
  • Public Lands
  • Claims
  • Miscellaneous

The Libraries have paper copies of the Serial Set from 1789-1997. To use these, please ask at the Reference Desk.
