Federal Policy Overview: "Ensuring Free, Immediate, and Equitable Access to Federally Funded Research" a.k.a. the Nelson Memo
In 2022, the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy released a memo that advised federal agencies that fund research of the following guidance concerning peer-reviewed publications: "Federal agencies should update or develop new public access plans for ensuring, as appropriate and consistent with applicable law, that all peer-reviewed scholarly publications authored or co-authored by individuals or institutions resulting from federally funded research are made freely available and publicly accessible by default in agency-designated repositories without any embargo or delay after publication." (emphasis in original)
While each federal agency was left to develop their own plans to implement this directive, the deadline for them to do so was Dec. 31, 2024. Those agency plans had to go into effect no later than one year after publication, meaning all such agency policies will be in effect no later than Dec. 31, 2025.

This workshop will open with a 20-minute presentation, "Federal Public Access Mandates for Research Data: What, Why, How". Following the talk, all attendees are invited to participate in an open discussion about sharing research data and ask any questions they may have. While this event is open to all, the material is tailored to researchers whose work is federally sponsored or who are seeking federal funding.
