Getting started
After installing EndNote, go to the Support & Services link on the EndNote homepage and download the latest update for your version of EndNote (e.g., EndNote X4.0.2). Don't skip this step!
If you do not have a copy of EndNote, a full-fledged version of EndNote can be downloaded for a free 30 day trial from the EndNote website http://www.endnote.com/endemo.asp. This allows you to evaluate EndNote and/or tide you over until a copy is purchased. Unfortunately, Auburn University does not have a site license for EndNote. The academic discount rate is about $120 for students and $180 for faculty.
To start a new EndNote library ...
- Open EndNote and choose Create a new EndNote library.
- Name the new library (aka file) and Save it to a convenient location.
Important: If you might publish in journals that use journal title abbreviations, then create a Journal Term List now! See below.
Journal abbreviations
Some journals require the use of journal abbreviations for references. If you might ever need to use a citation style that requires journal abbreviations, then before adding any references to a new EndNote library, import a Journal Terms list as described below.
If you have already added references to your EndNote library, the best thing to do is to create a new EndNote library, import a Journal Terms list, and then import the references from the existing EndNote library.
- In an EndNote library, under Tools select Define Term Lists.
- Go to the Lists tab, choose Journals, then Import List.
- Navigate to c:/program files/EndNote X4/Terms Lists, select one Journal Terms list such as BioScience, Chemical, or Medical, and click Open. Slightly better (larger) Journal Terms Lists can be downloaded from the University of Queensland's excellent EndNote website http://www.library.uq.edu.au/endnote/journal_terms.html. It is recommended that only one Journal Terms list be chosen, whether it is from the EndNote program or the University of Queensland website -- this avoids duplicate entries for journals which can later cause confusion.
- Close the Term List box.
It is recommended that you disable automatic updating of journal terms when downloading references from databases.

Edit --> Preferences --> Highlight Term Lists in the left-hand frame --> Uncheck the options "Update lists when importing or pasting references" and "Update lists during data entry".
