Videotape is fragile—subject to damage and deterioration from exposure to poor environmental conditions and inadequate handling practices. Even if properly cared for, magnetic tape may last for only a few decades.
Motion picture film can be polyester-based, nitrate-based, or acetate-based. Film preservation can be problematic, and it is best to inform youself before making any decisions.
Libraries and archives are often called with inquiries regarding film/videotape transfer services. Many professional services are available for transferring your film and videotape to digital format. Auburn University Libraries does not offer film and video conversion services and cannot make recommendations for commercial services.
