Alabama Cooperative Service (ACES) Collections

A digital collection provided by Auburn University Libraries containing photographs created by the Alabama Cooperative Extension Service (ACES)

Group of children

The Alabama Cooperative Extension Service (ACES) collections contain photographs and documents depicting the service's programs, most from the first half of the twentieth century. They offer a unique and evocative glimpse into Alabama agriculture, education, rural life, and rural pastimes in the first decades of the last century, including the activities of the Negro Cooperative Extension System.

Although Alabama offered extension services to farmers during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, the 1914 Smith-Lever Act formalized state organizations such as the Alabama Cooperative Extension Service. The Extension Service is headquartered at Auburn University and has offices in each of the state’s 67 counties.
