LADC Student Employees Guide

This website is intended to provide information regarding the various tasks, duties, and functions performed by student workers at the LADC.

REPORTING COMPUTER ISSUES TO THE IT DEPARTMENT

  • If a computer displays an Error Message to patrons, make sure to document the exact name and description of the error
  • Be sure to include as much information as you can about the issue; I.e., paper jam, printing job not going through, etc..
  • Attempt to resolve all issues on your own, but if you do not know, bring in your fellow student worker first, library staff second, and Amy last.
    • If no staff is present, email libhelp@auburn.edu

SETTING UP MEETINGS WITH LIBRARY STAFF

  • Occasionally a patron will bring something to your attention that must be passed along to library staff.  Whether that is due to an interaction being higher than a 3 on the READ scale in LibAnswers or if they simply request to speak to library staff, succinctly recording their contact information and the issue they wish to discuss is essential to resolving the issue in an expedient and professional manner.

    • REMEMBER!  The "READ" scale is one you should be familiar with through recording transactions in LibAnswers.  Please refer to that page here, section 3 for recommendations on when to handle a situation yourself and when to pass something important on to Amy.

USING THE ELEVATOR KEY

Whether you choose to see yourself as a Hoist Operator, Elevator Lift Attendant, Rising Room Conductor, or Ascenseur, part of our job here is to provide people access to B6 by escorting them downstairs using the elevator.

NEVER GIVE PATRONS OUR KEY, WE ONLY HAVE ONE.

Practice with the key so that you can confidently escort patrons down.  If they need to return up the elevator, they can have someone let us know or they can call us by phone.  B6 also has direct exits so they may not need assistance after being granted access.

GALLERY KEY CHECK-OUT REQUESTS

  • The LADC now only has a single key for our own use to unlock the gallery in the mornings and lock the gallery at night.
  • If faculty or staff wish to obtain a temporary key to use the Gallery outside of usual hours, they must go request a key from the CADC Dean's Office located on the second floor of Dudley Commons.

MANAGING THE GALLERY

The LADC is responsible for opening and closing the gallery during the hours in which we are open.

Opening

  • Unlock only the one door facing the stairwell
  • Turn on both of the light switches on the wall as well as the power-strip hanging behind the display wall.

Closing

  • Turn off all lights in the gallery.
  • Check from the outside that no one has unlocked the gallery door leading outside the building
  • Lock the inner door which faces the stairwell.

REMOVING DVD SECURITY DEVICES

  • DVD's have a 7-day check-out period
  • If you have not used this device, grab a DVD and try it for yourself so you can look good in front of patrons with your know-how!

Red DVD security devices are used to prevent the theft of DVDs from the LADC and need to be removed before leaving the library.

Pictured right are the two magnets used to remove the red security devices found within DVD cases. Both magnets are secured to the desk and cannot be removed.

Step 1 Place the open DVD case over the round magnet on the left. You will feel the red-tabbed security device be strongly drawn to the magnet.

Step 2 Use the tool on the right to sandwich the red security device between the two magnets. You will feel an even stronger increase in magnetism when the wand is placed above the security device.

Step 3 The pull of the two magnets moves a spring inside of the red security device allowing you to lift the red cap from its base using your fingernail.

Keep the red cap of the security device in the circulation drawer and reattach the security cap when the DVD is returned.

HOT TIP: Share with patrons who are checking out DVDs that the LADC offers free access to Kanopy Streaming Services which has great resources for faculty and students!

LOST AND FOUND DRAWER POLICY

  • Items found unattended in the LADC are to be placed in the Lost and Found drawer
  • Logged all items in the Lost and Found form found in the Lost and Found drawer.
    • Include the date the item was found, who found the item, and a brief description of the item on the form.
  • If a patron is looking for a lost item and we do not have it, you can recommend they check the Lost-and-Founds of the CADC Advisement Office in Dudley Hall, or, if has been a long time that they lost it here, they can check the Lost-and-Found at RBD.
  • At the end of each term, all items from our lost and found are sent to RBD's Lost and Found.
    • Items that are too large for the drawer can be kept for a few days, but are then sent to RBD's Lost and Found.

BOOK DONATIONS

If the patron would like to donate less than ten books:

  • Pull out a donation form from the help desk drawer
  • Ask them to read it carefully and emphasize that Amy will review them before determining where they are placed (in our collection, sent to RBD, on the Adopt-A-Book Shelf, etc.)
  • If they find everything amenable, ask them to fill out the form and return it to you
  • Hand the form to Amy or place it in her mailbox in the staff office should she not be here

If the patron would like to donate more than ten books:

  • They will need to contact Amy before doing so
  • Please hand the patron one of Amy's business cards so that they can set up a brief consultation
  • If there are no business cards, she can also be contacted at add0076@auburn.edu

INVENTORY

* Most Inventory management will happen during the summertime*

A yearly inventory is taken to ensure we have the items we claim to have. The number of items to be inventoried and the number of people working during the inventory process determines the number of pages prescribed to be completed each shift. It is a simple but tedious procedure that can be handled relatively quickly, given the joint effort of all here at the LADC.

To take inventory...

  • Use the Arch-Inventory printouts to check if the books are on the shelf.

  • If they are, make a check mark (or mark an "X") beside the entry.

  • If the book is not on the shelf, mark an "O" beside the entry.

If you are still looking for the book on the shelf...

  • Check the online catalog to see if the book is currently charged. If it is, mark an "X" through the "O" and write "checked out."

  • If anything else doesn't match up, or if you find a book not on the list, write a brief note to Robert or Amy to let us know, and we will look into it.

  • When you complete a page, please initial at the bottom.
