RE-SHELVING

The prompt return of an item to its proper location ensures maximum availability of items for patrons.

Make sure you check the inside and outside drop boxes throughout the day.                                                                                                                           Whether from the drop boxes, carrier, or if a patron hands in their items, make sure you check the items in.  An accurate inventory lets us find what we need. Re-magnetize any returned items and place them on the book cart.  Remember, the book cart is only temporary parking and books must be put up as soon as possible. REMEMBER:  we want all books back on the shelves for patrons to use.  Make sure that all books are reshelved before the end of each day.

STRAIGHTENING

PROPER SHELVING TECHNIQUE TOO LOOSE TOO TIGHT
  • If possible, book spines should be aligned with the front of each shelf to allow for maximum visibility of each item in the collection.
  • Leaning books, books sticking out, or books pushed too far back need to be straightened flush with he front lip of the shelf it is resting on.
  • If there is an abundance of room on a shelf, check sequentially before and after the shelf with room to see if shifting there is necessary.

  • Conversely, if there is a shelf that has too many books, check sequentially before and after the shelf that is too tight to see if there is room to shift books away from the overcrowded.
FOR LARGE BOOKS THAT ARE NOT OVERSIZED NOR PORTFOLIOS, PLACE SPINE DOWN IF THEY ARE TOO TALL TO FIT VERTICALLY
